South Korea Provides 3.3 Million USD to Support Health Sector in Svay Rieng

Under cooperation between Cambodia and South Korea through KOICA Cambodia office, the Ministry of Health celebrated the Signing Ceremony to get charity aid with total amount of 3.3 million USD for strengthening health sector in Siem Reap.

Mr. Kim Byung-gwan, Resident Representative of KOICA Cambodia office said at the ceremony on May 7, 2010 yesterday at MOH that KOICA has many activities to support the health sector in Cambodia “making a better world together”

Mr. Kim added that “this new centre will support the government strategies especially the project that focuses on mother and child healthcare for what they need, namely, providing treatment service in charity image.”

It should be noticed that the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) of the Republic of South Korea operated in Cambodia since 1990. This Agency supported to the development projects such as, Constructing of building for poor patients, Centre for children i.e. focuses on mother and infant healthcare.

Recently, KOICA Program officer told DAP that KOICA has a lot of important projects focuses on health sector which is its priority project. Up to the present, charity aid under the support of South Korea through KOICA Cambodia office is over 50 million$.

Concerning Good cooperation with Royal Government of Cambodia, especially MOH, some achievements emerged. First, construction of mother building and medicine centre for children including installation of medical instrument and equipment. Secondly, providing medicine which is beneficiary to medicine centre and some related equipments. Thirdly, providing training courses to medical doctors to enhance their professional capacity. Further more, to dispatch Korean experts to cooperate with doctors, including technique and implementation together.

Program officer indicated before the ceremony that, the implementation team visited Siem Reap as well. During its visit, they observed that S.R Provincial hospital is shortage in medical care which is necessary to pursue the further supported project from KOICA, and this is aiming at strengthening health sector to become better in Cambodia.

H.E. Prof. Eng Huot, Secretary of State of MOH said that “on be half of MoH, I would like to express my high appreciation that Korea has supported the health sector in Cambodia and provided extra projects to Siam Reap Provincial Hospital.”

Prof. Eng Huot added that “with the support from KOICA, it’s the testimony to push the health sector become better in Cambodia”. He said, adding that the cooperation between Cambodian and Korean government through KOICA is the mirror to show support to healthcare for poor people in Cambodia.

Prof. Eng Huot stressed that “Cambodia hopes the Republic of South Korea will pursue good cooperation with us, and this charity aid will contribute to Cambodian people who need help. Moreover, Korean government through KOICA Agency will continue this charity affair to Cambodia.”

On the other hand, Mr. Hort Sreou, Program Officer of KOICA Cambodia office mentioned that Korea has further projects which will be implemented next time and, following by its phases.

In reality, the project with total amount of 3.3 million USD will be implemented to support public health in Siam Reap for two years, dating from 2010 to 2012.
